Heritage Program

If you are seeking additional support for a family member who is living with Alzheimer's disease or another memory impairment, consider the "Heritage Program" available only in AON long-term care homes.

The S.T.E.P Approach

Our Heritage Program is based on the "STEP" approach to dementia care, with one area in each AON home dedicated to providing unique care and services in a comfortable and safe environment.

  • Specialized Training – Our staff receives specialized training in methods to help manage the unique needs of residents suffering from memory impairments.
  • Thoughtful Design – We provide 24-hour care in separate and secure environments, complete with dining rooms, outdoor courtyards, and furniture and décor that feel like home. The beautifully landscaped courtyards are secure and feature safe walking paths for residents and areas for horticultural therapy programs.
  • Engaging Families – For the loved ones of residents with dementia, we offer a variety of programs and tools, including a resource library, educational seminars, and support groups. We work closely with the local chapters of the Alzheimer's Society to provide these supports and to stay abreast of developments in dementia care.
  • Purposeful Activities – We focus on activities that increase the quality of life of our residents. These range from familiar, structured routines that ensure our residents are comfortable throughout their day, to activities that stimulate and nurture their mind, body, and spirit.

At AON long-term care homes, our highly skilled staff ensures that residents with memory impairments live in an atmosphere that is reassuring and supportive of their needs and identities.

AON LTC Homes are located in the village of Millbrook, just minutes south of Peterborough, and in the village of Tweed, a short distance north of Belleville, Ontario.
